Resources:

We have provided an extensive list of various training articles, web sites, and books that you may find useful as references. This list can be a bit overwhelming. Some books that you may want to add to your initial collection are:

Kazdin A. 1994. Behavior modification in applied settings. Pacific Grove CA: Brooks/Cole Publishing Company. (This book has definitions of terms and explains the concepts involved in learning theory.)

Kleiman D, Allen M, Thompson K, Lumpkin S, editors. 1996. Wild mammals in captivity: Principles and techniques . (In addition to a chapter on animal learning and husbandry training, this book also discusses many other aspects of managing wild animals.)

Pryor K. 1984. Don’t shoot the dog! Simon & Schuster: New York. (This is a great book for explaining training methods and concepts involved in learning theory. Karen Pryor’s stories make the concepts easy to understand.)

Ramirez K. 1999. Animal training: Successful animal management through positive reinforcement. Chicago: Ken Ramirez and the Shedd Aquarium. (This is a very comprehensive book that covers terminology, learning theory, training methods, program development and much more.)
